SAFA goalkeeping logoForeword: Whilst awareness of the need for specialised coaching for goalkeepers has improved, due to time and resource constraints, goalkeepers at all levels still do not receive the attention they deserve. Qualified coaches with real experience of the position are hard to find. At SAFA we are able to provide coaching for goalkeepers with Dean Lightwood, Goalkeeping Coach for Conference South team Eastbourne Borough, on the following basis:

Individual & Group Coaching Sessions.
• “Club Class” – a coaching day for your club’s goalkeepers and/or your coaches.
• School Holiday Courses.
• Midweek Development Centre coming soon!
• Coach and 360 degree Feedback & Next Steps Report available for students on request.

Curriculum: Courses will include most if not all elements detailed. Course content will depend on the age of the student/student group and facilities available at the venue.

Ball Familiarity
• A range of fun exercises incorporated as part of the warm up/warm down, to encourage hand/eye co-ordination, improve flexibility, and general confidence in handling the ball.

Handling
• Set Position - Hands, Body, Feet
• Ground Shots – the 3rd Hand
• Crosses
• Reaction and Recovery Saves

Footwork for ’Keepers
• Includes S.A.Q style exercises for quick feet, required for balance, change in direction and recovery saves, and sweeping up.
• Footwork and general movement around the goal and penalty area to ensure you get to the right position to make a save the save as easy as possible.

Communication
• Decision Making - Common situations and Instructions to your defence.

Positional Play for the Keeper
• One V One
• General Defensive Shape and organising your team.
• Corners against
• Free kicks against

Psychology for ’Keepers
• Concentration Levels and Getting over Mistakes.

Distribution
• Kicking
• Throwing and Starting the Attack
• Sweeping Up & Back Passes

Small Sided Games and Goalkeeping Specific Drills
• Specific Drills & Games to demonstrate and practice techniques.
• Game related coaching in small-sided games.

Goalkeepers - Number 1 For A Reason!

Please note the drills can be physically demanding, spare clothing and a towel is advisable for all sessions.
